Job Opportunity: Front End UI/Web Designer

What we are looking for
We are seeking a talented front-end web designer who also has excellent CSS, HTML, Ajax skills. You should be comfortable building sites from scratch producing fantastic clean, semantic markup without the need for frameworks.
You should also have experience building rock solid, standards compliant, cross-browser compatible websites along with a good to excellent understanding of JavaScript and when to use it; you will be comfortable writing your own functions rather than rely on plugins (or writing your own plugins). A keen eye for design and an understanding of user experience design would be an advantage. You likely have an interest in emerging trends: canvas, media queries, flexible grids, and draft CSS3 enhancements.
We want you to work on our next generation web applications. You will have a passion for creating simple, clean and intuitive interfaces, but also a working knowledge of some of the technologies to deliver leading edge, interactive sites and applications. The successful candidate will become a key member of a small, passionate team with a rapidly expanding company focused on deploying innovative products.
We are also looking for someone who will be a knowledge resource for the latest trends and technologies for web interface design and development. You will work to actively assist in improving the usability, usefulness and desirability of our applications.

Specific Skills
Technical
Obviously this is an ever-changing landscape, but here are the skills we feel we are looking for:
First and foremost, you should have an excellent eye for design. You should know great web UI when you see it, and be able to explain why it’s great (even if you didn’t create it!).
Strong command of visual design capabilities, including composition, layout information hierarchy, typography and colour.
Conduct ongoing research of web-based user interface development best practices. Introduce emerging user interface technologies into the stack.
Work on new features and functionality and suggest improvements to other areas of the applications based on user feedback.
Contribute to the overall look and feel of the brand through clean, efficient use of web standards and optimisation.
Apply graphic design principles including layout, typography, and color theory with strong skills in information hierarchy.
Fluency with web standards and technologies, including HTML5, CSS, Javascript
Extensive experience with JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Prototype, jQuery).
Deep experience with maintaining cross-browser compatibility (multiple versions of Safari, Firefox, Chrome and IE).
Finally, you should have a solid portfolio. We want to see that you’ve built great web interfaces before, not just great websites.

What we are looking for
We are seeing a talented developer to join our team, on a one-year placement, to help us to take forward our competitive intelligence applications. We are currently focusing on pricing intelligence solutions for online retailers, but also researching new products to help businesses gain a competitive edge. We are naturally looking for someone who is enthusiastic, smart and talented but also someone who has a demonstrable passion for coding using scripting languages. We operate with a 'startup' culture with a loyal and close-knit team. You will be coding in Python and ideally you need to be experienced in at least one server-side or scripting language.
This is a unique position and the successful candidate will gain a substantial amount of knowledge during the time working with us.
Our technology stack includes Python, Pyramid / Pylons framework, MySQL or Postgres, and MongoDB.
Although some Python experience is desirable, it’s more important to be able to demonstrate an understanding of OOP in another language such as PHP, Ruby or Java, Having enthusiasm for learning Python is a must.

Help us to systemise our business
We are looking for a business school student who, over the Summer, can help us to implement business systems that will help our company to work more effectively. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate and you will be working in a multi-disciplined role, with quite a lot of autonomy. Naturally we are only seeking self-starters who are prepared to roll up their sleeves and who revel in achievement.
- You will need strong communication skills to fulfil this role. Although not exhaustive, the following outlines the type type of work you will be undertaking:
- Research books, blogs and sites relating to creating systems within a business
- Create an overview of all the areas of the business that require systems
- Work with stakeholders within each division to identify weaknesses and areas where systems will make a huge difference, compiling a list
- Create documentation and draft procedures for each identified system
- Utilising screen recording software for complex tasks better recorded on video
